Always hire a contractor with an established business in your area.  Local firms can be checked through past customers, and as tax-paying members of your community, are compelled to perform satisfactory work for local homeowners in order for their businesses to survive.

***************

Check the remodeling contractor with the government Consumer Affairs Office, the State Attorney General's Office, and/or other local consumer organizations to ensure there are no adverse files or records.

***************

Ask for references and follow up on them.  Call the references - don't be afraid to ask specific questions such as:  "Did the contractor begin the work on time?"  "Was the job site kept clean?"  "Were the final details finished in a timely manner?" and "Would you use this contractor again without hesitation?"  Ask to see the finished project.  Make sure you are satisfied with the quality of the work.

***************

Be sure each home improvement project is begun with a well-written and detailed contract.  A warranty covering workmanship should be written into the contract that is in accordance with the new laws of the State of Texas.
